The XJR400R was the Japanese-market small-capacity retro naked bike, a 400 cc air-cooled four with a six-speed box built to the domestic licence class. By 2001 it had received a new swingarm, wheels and muffler plus monoblock four-piston front calipers shared with the R1. It is a compact, light roadster with a traditional twin-shock layout.
